Why I got into Functional Fitness

I’ve had such an extensive fitness journey, from losing 70lbs from calorie deficit and working out twice a day to doing group classes, to getting into weightlifting, I feel like I’ve truly tried it all. After more than six years of working out, I realized I never truly felt fit. I either struggled with my cardio or I couldn’t get through obstacles like someone who works out regularly should. Traditional weightlifting helped me build strength and muscle which is optimal for longevity and overall health, but it started to feel limited in what it could help me achieve. I started to look into functional training so I could target all the things in a single workout.

Functional training is not just about getting stronger (which, of course, is awesome), but it also helps you become more flexible, agile, and ready for anything! I love that it’s practical, one hour class and you’re done and these movements prepare you for real-life activities. Whether you’re lifting groceries or running to catch a flight (we’ve all been there), this style of workout has your back. It’s like hitting all your fitness goals in one go—muscle building, cardio, flexibility, all in one! I know the topic of CrossFit is controversial in the fitness community and it has a bad rep from all the possible injuries you could get, but if you research and find the right gym, it really makes a difference. Training this way requires really good form and someone guiding you through the process the entire time. It also requires self-awareness on what you can and can’t do yet. I’ve seen a difference in my strength, endurance, and mobility. CrossFit challenges your entire body, and I love how every workout is different. No more repeating the same exercises week after week—it keeps things fresh and exciting!

The biggest game-changer for me, though, has been learning to listen to my body. In the past, I’d pushed myself to stick to a rigid routine, thinking that was the only way to see results. But with functional training, I’ve learned to go with the flow! Some days, my body feels like crushing a high-intensity workout, and other days, it’s telling me to slow down and stretch things out. And that’s okay! Listening to my body has helped me stay consistent and actually enjoy working out again.
